Welcome from the Chair

Jim Hightower,
California State University, Fullerton

Welcome to the 12th Annual ACM Symposium on Applied Computing. SAC'97 is sponsored by four ACM SIGs: Applied Computing(SIGAPP), Ada (SIGAda), Biomedical Computing (SIGBIO), and Computer Uses in Education (SIGCUE). We expect this to be an exciting preamble to ACM's 50th birthday celebration, ACM97. Once again we have an overlap arrangement with SIGCSE'97. For more on these two events see below.

This year our Symposium begins on Friday with a plenary session and a keynote speech by Adele Goldberg. This is followed by a full day of technical sessions and an evening reception. Breaking with tradition, this year we will have a second plenary session on Saturday with second keynote presentation by Elliott Soloway and Cathie Norris. After this event we continue our technical sessions. The chairs of the fourteen technical tracks have again done an outstanding job of providing us with presentations of state-of-the-art research in Applied Computing. On Sunday there are six excellent tutorials to choose from.

We hope that you will leave this year's Symposium enriched with new friends and new ideas. Again welcome to SAC'97.
