SIGAPP Student Travel Award Program

The SIGAPP Student Travel Award Program (STAP) exists to provide support to help SIGAPP student members attend SIGAPP primary conference (SAC) where they are the primary author and presenter of accepted papers. It is expected that these funds will be applied for only when it would not be possible to attend otherwise. The deadline for applications will normally be the deadline for registering as "paper author". Applications will be evaluated on a competitive basis. Expenses that will be considered for coverage include conference registration fees, travel expenses to and from the conference, and shared accommodation expenses while attending SAC. Note that meal expenses will not be covered by the SIGAPP STAP funds and neither will cost related to getting a visa to travel to the conference location. The awards range from $400 to $800 depending on type of travel (intercontinental or intra-continental) and the applicant pool and their needs. SIGAPP expects institutions to share costs in the funding of students.

Students may join SIGAPP for a very nominal fee ($8) and become eligible for this funding. Only SIGAPP student members are eligible for this award. Please see this URL for more details:

Please pay strict attention to the application submission requirements listed in the application form (PDF) or application form (Word). Make sure the number you add to the form relates to your SIGAPP membership. Being only a member of the ACM (without a SIGAPP membership) does not make you eligible to receive the award.

The application must include:

  • student resume
  • detailed travel budget (make sure you research prices)
  • reference letter from the student's advisor(s)
  • form above

The letter should confirm the budget and state why SIGAPP should support your travel to SAC. After completing your application:

  • Send all required documents in one compressed in a ZIP via email (address below)
  • The subject of your message should be:
    STAP APPLICATION: <lastname, firstname>
where <lastname, firstname> should be replaced by your lastname and first name. Eg. if you're called John Smith the subject of your message should be
    STAP APPLICATION: Smith, John
  • An email confirming that your application has been received will be sent to you. Please allow 48 hours for the confirmation to be sent. If you do not receive a confirmation in 48 hours you should contact Dr. Eric Wong via email (address below).
  • Only email applications are accepted.

The STAP application deadline for SAC 2010 is November 5, 2009.
